100% of proceeds after initial recording costs will go to Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes.
~
We have work to do. After the results of the 2016 presidential election were in, many people in America--especially women, minorities, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and those of us residing in the lower and middle class income bracket--felt strong emotions, ranging from fear to anger to depression, and were left wondering what to do to most effectively combat the threat of harmful decisions affecting our daily way of life, including our health and reproductive care, our protection from discrimination, our public school funding, the preservation of land inhabited by our native people and our national parks, the status and security of our immigrant population, our freedom of speech and of information-seeking...the list goes on. We made signs, and we marched; we paid attention, and we learned; we called our representatives; we began to more consciously support businesses owned by people of color; we used our voices, gathered in solidarity, lost sleep; my mom and I had a hundred buttons printed that read, “I will do my best to stop any bigot who messes with you,” and we passed them out to anyone who wanted one. But for me, none of it felt like enough, so with my husband and writing partner, Mike Suave, I turned to the place we both feel most at home and most effective: music.

Together we wrote a song, which always begins as a personal and quiet act but one that can potentially transform into something larger and more widely received. We began thinking about the many important organizations that were already under direct attack within the emerging political climate, and Planned Parenthood surfaced at the top of the list. We sought to collaborate with other members of our vibrantly creative hometown musical community working in different genres, and we decided to use this effort to raise funds for our local Planned Parenthood. While I’d like to let the song mostly speak for itself, I will say that its intention is to unite, uplift, motivate, and mobilize, and we would like our friends, families, larger community, and anyone who will listen to join our effort to raise funds for an organization that we all believe in.

The writers and musicians are not accepting compensation for their work. After initial recording costs, one hundred percent of the proceeds of this song will go directly to Planned Parenthood, and the donations will be perpetual: any time in the future that someone downloads the song (for a price of their choosing), that money will go directly to PP of the Southern Finger Lakes.

Thank you for helping us make the music that helps great organizations like Planned Parenthood continue to provide valuable services to our community.

Special thanks to Rachael Behling and Alicia Kenaley at Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes for their work in forging this partnership.

With love and in solidarity,
Maddy

lyrics

I Won't Give Up

Whoa, the whole world shoulda stopped spinning
Hit reverse and take us back to the beginning
where the friction started so we can fix things, yeah
But no, it didn't
The sun is still shining, the birds are still singing
but I'm too tired to listen
This for people of all religions and people of all colors and all
women
and all men too, yeah, and all children
and it don't matter your orientation or where you're from or why
you're different
Here, sign this petition
Gather your family and all your friends and we'll break down the
mission
Hand in hand we'll open the borders and play our music and we'll all
dance with them

I wanna crawl back
into my mother
The world's so angry and loud
I just need a quiet room
No time to sit out
when there's so much work to do
I won't give up
I won't give up on you

Okay, we have work to do
So put your coat on and tie your shoes
Ante up, yup, I'm talking to you
It's a brand new anthem we can ride to
when it's people out here that'll try to divide you
and tell you to smile when you're being lied to
but you know better yeah I do too and I'm trying to keep my cool
Everybody in the house grab a flashlight, adjust your sight, and
then pull the trigger
Hold on tight with all your might, 'cause here's how much power you
have in your fingers
You are the wind underneath the kite
and you are the stars and the moon at night
and your heart beats with all of life so shine your flashlight
bright

I wanna crawl back
into my mother
The world's so angry and loud
I just need a quiet room
No time to sit out
when there's so much work to do
I won't give up
I won't give up on you

Open up
Shine your light
I'll hold your heart
please hold onto mine

I wanna crawl back
into my mother
The world's so angry and loud
I just need a quiet room
No time to sit out
when there's so much work to do
I won't give up
I won't give up on you
